One hundred and twenty five years ago, 1892, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker is performed for the first time, Ellis Island opens in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, the Gilded Age is fading away as the Progressive Era begins and in downtown Duluth the Northern Pacific Railroad opens its beautiful Union Depot. Today the Duluth Depot is the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center, a celebration of the heart and soul of Arts, Culture and History in our region. The Duluth Depot’s Participating Member Organizations invite the community to celebrate this vibrant 125 year history with a FREE 125th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday November 8th from 4PM until 7PM.
Starting with a welcoming Press Conference at 4:30PM in the Great Hall, there will be a combined Duluth Superior Symphony and Minnesota Ballet performance of Mikhail Fokine’s Dying Swan followed by a tap dance performance by the Duluth Playhouse.
There will be celebratory cake, donated by the Exchange, and toasted with punch and Champagne. The Duluth Depot will be open for tours featuring two new exhibits in the galleries of the Duluth Art Institute. A squad of Civil War reenactors will be bivouacked guarding the Lincoln Funeral Car Exhibit on the tracks of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum which will be open for tours, and docents will offer guided tours of the Immigrant Waiting Room Exhibit, “Duluth’s Ellis Island”.
The Ojibwe Gallery will be open for viewing.
The St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center, the Duluth Depot, is on the National Register of Historic Places and was heralded as a groundbreaking reuse of retired train stations when it became an Arts, Culture and History Center in 1973. The Duluth Depot is open daily from 9am – 5pm.
