Depot Viewing Extended for Erie Mining Company Traveling Exhibit through April 13, 2018

The St. Louis County Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of a major traveling exhibit about the history of the Erie Mining Company. Designed by Gary Lundstrom, the exhibit is entitled The Promise, The Promise Kept, The Promise Realized, The Promise Renewed: The History of the Erie Mining Company. This large four-bay display is a project milestone, and precedes the design and installation of a larger, fixed exhibit at the Depot slated to open fall 2019.

The Erie Mining Company was a pioneer in the taconite industry. A team of its former employees collected oral histories of mining employees, researched and documented company records, and will publish a definitive history of the Erie Mining Company this October. The cost of the entire multi-phase project is approaching $500,000, with funds being provided through private donations, foundations and a grant from the Minnesota State Legislature. Visitors may view the exhibit at the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (the Depot), 506 W. Michigan Street, Duluth, Minnesota on the ground floor of the Depot, next to the model train exhibit, from March 7 through April 13. After six weeks at the Depot, the exhibit will be available for display at other locations throughout St. Louis County. Please call the Society’s administrative office at 218.733.7586 for more information, or email kathleen@thehistorypeople.org.
