History in a Pint on January 15, 2019

Veterans Memorial Hall, a program of the St. Louis County Historical Society, announces its next event in the local history discussion series, “History in a Pint.” The presentation entitled “Saving Pilot Bush” will take place at Carmody Irish Pub and Brewing, and will begin at 5:30 pm on Tuesday January 15th.
Mike Zeman of Duluth will tell some of the stories of his father, EM Marvin Zeman, crewman on the submarine USS Finback during WWII. The Finback sailed a dozen successful combat missions in the Pacific Theatre wreaking havoc on Japanese transport. Amongst the missions was a very important one historically; the rescue of a little known Navy pilot, George H.W. Bush, after he had been shot down and ditched in the ocean. He would later become the 41st President of the United States.
The event is free and open to the public. We advise guests to park in the parking ramp behind and connected to the Sheraton, which is across the street from Carmody’s.
Veterans Memorial Hall was established in 1910 and is a joint program of the St. Louis County Historical Society and the military service veterans of northeastern Minnesota with a mission to gather, preserve, interpret, and promote the rich and diverse human experiences of veterans, their families and communities, through museum, archival and educational programs. Its website, www.vets-hall.org, features more than 7,000 veteran stories.
