Toys: The Inside Story

The Duluth Depot is excited to announce the opening of Toys: The Inside Story in the Depot’s Great Hall on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

If your parents never let you break open your Etch A Sketch to find out how it works, or if you’ve been wondering how to stop your toddler’s push toy from making an infernal racket, you’ll love Toys: The Inside Story. Visitors to the Duluth Depot will be among the first in the country to see this new Exhibit beginning March 7th and running through April 15th.

Toys includes 12 different hands-on stations that illustrate the simple mechanisms commonly found in toys, and lets visitors create their own toy-like combinations of gears, pulleys, linkages, cams, and circuits. Jack Gets Out of His Box gives visitors a close-up view of the cam combination that frees our hero “Jack”, while elsewhere we unmask the amazing collection of switches, cams and motors that make Elmo dance and Mr. Machine run.

Many of the exhibits are free-form and open-ended: Gears at Play illustrates the effects of gear ratios s visitors figure out how to spin ballerinas and a carousel, while the Jeepers Peepers challenge at the pulley table may take a little experimentation to solve.

Those looking for a discount are invited to attend our “$25 Family Rate Sunday” event on March 17th. An entire immediate family gets admission to the Depot museums, including this NEW Exhibit, for one low price of only $25!

The exhibit was developed by the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont with funding from a National Science Foundation grant awarded to seven museums around the country that comprise TEAMS (Traveling Exhibits at Museums of Science). It was brought to the Duluth Depot with a generous grant awarded by the Depot Foundation.

The exhibition runs from March 7 through April 15, 2019 at the Duluth Depot, open daily from 9am – 5pm and located at 506 West Michigan Street.

The information above was provided by Briana Johnson, Program Director of the Depot.
