New York Fashion Week Comes to the Depot with Buckanaga Social Club

DIBENINDIZOWIN - Mastering One’s Self
WHAT: The Buckanaga Social Club’s collection shown at New York’s Fashion Week
WHEN: Friday, May 3, 5 to 8:30 p.m.
WHERE: St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (the Depot)
See 15 unique looks in women’s and menswear lines curated, designed, and produced by Amber Buckanaga and the Buckanaga Social Club collective. The collection is inspired by the Anishinaabe ideal of freedom that Buckanaga says tells of her journey in mastering one’s self. Elaborate ribbon skirts become everyday wear. Sport wear becomes rooted in the legacy of Anishinaabe woodland patterns. Recycled and natural fabrics left over from one outfit to fit are used in the design of another.
“For indigenous people, having the option of wearing clothing with elements of traditional designs gives them a feeling of confidence and pride,” says Buckanaga. “For non-indigenous people, it gives them some insight into the traditional designs and an appreciation for the elements of traditional regalia.” Don’t miss this unique and thoughtful line of clothing. Its impact and authenticity will open your mind to see fashion in a new way.
The St. Louis County Historical Society will be showing displays of Anishinaabe items, regalia, and Eastman Johnson Paintings to help celebrate the long-held tradition fashion has played in the Anishinaabe culture.
