USS Duluth Crewmembers Raise Ship’s Flag at Duluth City Hall

9:00 AM, Thursday, June 13th

The public is invited to a flag-raising ceremony at Duluth’s City Hall, for the flag that flew over the USS Duluth LPD6 between 2002 and 2004.

The flag will be raised by members of the USS Duluth crew at a ceremony beginning at 9 a.m., June 13. The flag will remain at City Hall through June 15, as Navy and Marine Corps veterans who served on the USS Duluth gather for a reunion. This includes Flag Day, June 14. Also participating in the ceremony will be the Duluth Honor Guard, the Twin Ports Division Navy Cadets, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

The flag flew from the ship’s mast during a six-month overseas deployment in that timeframe. Sometimes called a Holiday Ensign, the flag is known historically as a “Battle Ensign.” The USS Duluth LPD-6 was in service from 1965-2005.

The crew is proud to share the USS Duluth Ensign with the city of Duluth, and invites the public to tour Veterans Memorial Hall free of charge at the Depot in downtown Duluth, to learn more about the ship’s history. Visitors can also view the USS Duluth Anchor Memorial, located on Duluth’s Lakewalk.

Veterans Memorial Hall was established in 1910 and is a joint program of the St. Louis County Historical Society and the military service veterans of northeastern Minnesota with a mission to gather, preserve, interpret, and promote the rich and diverse human experiences of veterans, their families and communities, through museum, archival and educational programs. Its website, www.vets-hall.org, features more than 7,000 veteran stories.
