Lunch with the History People - Sept. 19, 2019

When: Thursday, September 19, 2019, from noon – 1 PM
Who: For twenty years, Tim Cochrane served as superintendent of Grand Portage National Monument, located on the North Shore. His work included fire lookout, back-country ranger, historian and anthropologist for the National Park Service. He also wrote three books based on his historical research: Minong–The Good Place: Ojibwe and Isle Royale, A Good Boat Speaks for Itself: Isle Royale Fishermen and Their Boats (Minnesota, 2002) and Gichi Bitobig, Grand Marais: Early Accounts of the Anishinaabeg and the North Shore Fur Trade.
What: Tim discusses “Gichi Bitobig: The American Fur Company Comes to the North Shore and the Anishinaabeg Leadership of Espagnol.” His lecture walks us back into history, during the time of Espagnol's leadership, the North Shore Anishinaabeg leader. Learn about the interactions of Espagnol and the American Fur Trade in the mid-1820s. Hear captivating stories describing the struggles of two clerks who came to Grand Marias, as Tim reads directly from their journals.
Where: The event will be held in the Great Hall on the third floor (main floor) of the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (the Depot), at 506 West Michigan Street, Duluth, Minnesota.
There will be limited theater-style seating (no tables), but feel free to bring your own bag lunch. Seating is first-come, first-served (no reservations). Admittance to this event is free to the public. ARCO coffee is provided.
