Veterans Memorial Hall, a program of St. Louis County Historical Society, annually awards a scholarship in memory of Mike Colalillo, who was the last known surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient in the state of Minnesota. The scholarship is funded by the Mike Colalillo Medal of Honor Scholarship Fund, which is fiscally administered by the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.

In 2019, a scholarship award of $1,500 will be given to one student.
In order to be eligible, applicants need to be:
A full-time student who is enrolled in a higher education institution in St. Louis County, - or -
A resident of St. Louis County, Minnesota, who is a full-time student enrolled in a higher education institution outside of St. Louis County, Minnesota.
Scholarship applicants are required to submit a research paper on a topic relevant to veterans of St. Louis County, Minnesota. It should be a minimum of four (4) and a maximum of ten (10) double-spaced pages in length, including listed sources from the Albert J. Amatuzio Research Center, located in the Depot Building. Research papers must include a bibliography.
Research papers may address a historical event in St. Louis County, Minnesota, related to a conflict, a war, the home front or tell the story of a county veteran. We encourage applicants to contact us for possible project ideas at 218.576.3114 or 218.733.7500.
A minimum of one resource from the Albert J. Amatuzio Research Center must be referenced. Staff members are available to assist researchers, by appointment: Monday – Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM.
