Since its inception in 1922, the St. Louis County Historical Society has sought to discover, preserve, and disseminate knowledge about the history, and prehistory, of St. Louis County as well as the state of Minnesota. In addition to collecting and preserving objects of material culture and historical research material, the Society maintains and operates a museum as well as materially participates in the collections and operations of a historical research center adequate to serve the region encompassing St. Louis County and northeastern Minnesota.

Veterans Memorial Hall is a joint program of the St. Louis County Historical Society and the United States Military service veterans of northeastern Minnesota, with a mission to gather, preserve, interpret, and promote the rich and diverse human experiences of veterans, their families, and communities through museum, archival, and educational programs.

The St. Louis County Historical Society currently has six affiliate organizations. These organizations are the Ely-Winton Historical Society, Hibbing Historical Society & Museum, the Minnesota Museum of Mining, Sisu Heritage Inc., the Tower-Soudan Historical Society, and the Virginia Area Historical Society.
