Mike spent eight years writing the book, Vera, which is a compilation of stories from the life of Vera Socha, his mother. What: Mike will discuss Vera: A Gripping True Story of Amazing Perseverance and Love. Vera Socha was born in the Southern Ukraine in 1926. During World War II, when Vera was only 16 years old, she was forced to leave her family and work in Germany under dire conditions. In 1951, she immigrated to Duluth. Society Employees visit the Pioneer Mine

This last Thursday and Friday, Society employees Samantha Tubbs and Charley Langowski made a site visit to the Pioneer Mine in Ely, Minnesota. The two day trip consisted of Society employees becoming familiar with the mine and its volunteers. It also included a quick introduction to the Arts and Heritage Center. From there, Sam and Charley created a starter kit for the museum portion of the mine as well as made recommendations for funding, preservation projects, collections care and management, community involvement, and so on.
